Set in 2003, after the invasion of Iraq, Days of Significance follows the complex love lives and mortal fears of young soldiers departing their English market-towns for the deserts of the Middle East. With questions around morality at its heart, this thought-provoking play examines the cost of sending naïve young people to war, and the catastrophic reverberations for the West’s moral authority.

This production piloted ‘Safe Space’ methods with the support of Guildhall’s Safe Space Working Group. I had the pleasure of designing a new ‘decompression room’, researching quiet and sensory rooms in theatres & public spaces. Thanks go to Qian Yan Tan for her advice and expertise. The materials used or bought for this show were entirely recycled, reused, or repurposed for other projects. By the get-out, our only discards were 3 paint cans and 2 broken, unfixable chairs.

Performed by singers and repetiteurs from the first year of the Guildhall Opera Course, Opera Makers features new works written by composers and librettists on Guildhall’s MA in Opera Making & Writing alongside a selection of opera scenes by French composers Ravel and Poulenc.

The three new operas premiered in this production are Lantern Fish by composer Luka Venter and librettist David Bottomley; Lost Property by composer Anna Disley-Simpson and librettist Olivia Bell; and Reborns by composer Elif Nur Karlidag and librettist Stanley Lawson.
